Vintage Jocotepec Hand Woven, Pancho, Jorongo Mexico, 39" by 63"
Priced in Mexican Pesos. Vintage Jocotepec Hand Woven, Pancho, Jorongo Mexico, 39" by 63" (all wool).
A Jorongo or Pancho has a slit in the center to insert your head.
There was a time when Jocotepec, Jalisco was a weaving center for central Mexico.
Oaxaca has moved into the forefront of Mexican rug/blanket weaving but there are early examples like this 'Jorongo' ( pancho is another name associated with a "wearing blanket"). Here is a good example of the quality and durability of the vintage Joco product. I estimate this to be from the 1970's. The brown wool is the natural color of the lambs wool, not dyed.
The colorful arrows in the center are the traditional Jocotepec design from the 19th C. We have one on our website to see how the antique pieces were designed.
Todays typical work are the decorative hangings on wood sticks that one sees along the highways for sale.
