Antique Ottoman Embroidery, Turkish Towel #3 , 73" Sash
Peso Priced Item; Elaborate silk and metallic embroidery on this early linen Ottoman towel. These became known as Turkish towels, nothing like the thick lush towels associated with that name today. They were actually used in multiple layers to absorb the moisture from a body when getting out of a Turkish bath.. thus the name. All the towels we have listed here today are from the 1996 auction at Christies in London of the Bernheimer Textile collections. My consignor bought them there, 24 years ago. This measures 73" long by 8" wide. I am calling it a sash. A few dark spots, otherwise in very stable condition. All of these are double sided embroidered, that is, the design is identical on each side.
