Teodoro Martinez Benito, Ocumichu, 7 Headed Creature, 1960-70's
Priced in Mexican Pesos. Marcelino Vicente, a young man in Ocumichu in 1966 apparently had some sort of dream and the result was his creation of the Devil figures that are today a mainstay of the pottery works created in Ocumichu today.
During the time he was creating these devils, he caught the attention of Teodoro Martinez Benito. Teodoro accompanied him on promotional trips to Guadalajara, Uruapan and Mexico CIty. Since Teodoro spoke Spanish and Marcelino only Tabasquena, Teodoro helped Marcelino as a translator and to promote his products, creating new images of the devil, even some in pornographic positions!
Marcelino was tragically killed only two years into his creative period (1968).
The Spanish language report of his untimely death is that an assasin walked into a cantina and pulled out a Colt 38 and ended Marcelino's life.
The English language report says that he was assumed to be gay and that he was beaten to death in the cantina and left to bleed to death. Who knows?
These are from the Estate of Hubert Harmon who purchased these from Teodoro and his daughter Antonio (Martinez Alvarez) around 1970, we have four original figures from his Estate.
This Drunk Woman on 7 Headed Creature, this is 12" tall and is marked in the bottom 'Teodoro Martinez Benito'.. the stamped mark states his name and Calle Allende 71, Ocumichu.
This and all the pieces we have from this collection show signs of old repairs.
After 50+ years this unfired clay is brittle.
