Antique Ottoman Embroidery, Turkish Towel #2 , Strawberries
Peso Priced Item; Elaborate silk and metallic embroidery on this early linen Ottoman towel. These became known as Turkish towels, nothing like the thick lush towels associated with that name today. They were actually used in multiple layers to absorb the moisture from a body when getting out of a Turkish bath.. thus the name. All the towels we have listed here today are from the 1996 auction at Christies in London of the Bernheimer Textile collections. My consignor bought them there, 24 years ago. This measures 29" long by 14" wide. A water mark across one half, the embroidery is perfect condition as are the edges. In very stable condition. I assume, due to the character of linen, that the water mark can be removed. This one still has the auction tag from Christies London. All of these are double sided embroidered, that is, the design is identical on each side.
