To scoop boiled water out of the large pot that was always kept on the stove. To serve soups and broths, etc. Concha is short for the female name "Conception" From the 1950's although these have been used for a century and still to this day. The clay body is amazingly thin.. the bottoms get blacked from putting them directly on the fire or embers in the kitchen.
