Antique Mexican Jorongo, Indigo Dye & Natural White Wool
Peso Priced Item:
A beautiful early 20th C. Mexican weaving with the owners' initials MA. or AM. These are called Jorongos when there is a split in the middle for the head to pass through. They are sometimes called sarapes, zarapes or serapes. Albiet those those go over the shoulder, the head does not pass through the center in this case. The design resembles sharks teeth but could be pine trees?
I was told once by an older rancher, that the reason they have their initials, was to solve any problems of ownership late at night in a saloon when all the jorongos/sarapes looked alike!!
This is such an unusual design that I doubt there was more than one of these to be confused about. The condition is good, one patch and a couple of stains. This measures 74" long and 42.5" wide.
