Vintage Salvador Vazquez, Brunido Box, Tonala, 8 1/2" Square

Priced in Mexican Pesos.

Vintage Salvador Vazquez, Brunido Box,  Tonala.  A master of Brunido in Tonala.  During this period of his career he was under the tutelage of Jorge Wilmot.  The Naguales (the odd animal figures decorating all sides) were a favorite design of Jorge.  Jorge was instrumental in bringing out the best of the artisans of  Tonala, he is credited with 'creating' many of todays masters through his encouragement and support of the young artisans in Tonala and Tlaquepaque back in the last quarter of the 20th C.

This box is probably from around 1995-2000.  His signature has become much finer, his base materials thinner (this is a thick clay).  All the signs of an early work by this Master potter.

The size is 8 1/2" by 8 1/2" and 13" tall.  There is one glued leg, otherwise in very good condition.  The brunido work can be damaged through improper handling but this 20+ year old piece has survived with a good finish.
