* Roberto de la Selva Wood Carving of Zeus, Signed/dated 1944
Priced in Mexican Pesos. Roberto de la Selva, one of the most important sculptors in Mexico was actually from Nicaragua. He moved to Mexico City in 1921 and befriended Diego Rivera and from there he began to excel. His works are in major museums of the world, most important are his bas relief panels in San Antonio, Texas. This is carved in white mahogany and measures 24" tall (61cm), 8" wide and 12" deep. It is signed and dated 1944. This is from the estate of his niece Flor de la Selva Baptista ( daughter of Roberto's brother Rogerio) . She was an eccentric doctor in Guadalajara who inherited this from her parents. At some point while in her possession she removed the horns of Zeus because she saw them as diabolic.. interesting and sad. They could be replaced, one of my photos shows the spot where they came out of the cranium ( I don't think they were carved from the same block, but added as a 3 dimensional feature. Otherwise in perfect condition with a wonderfull patina to the wood.
