Lawrence Biddle, Pansies & Geraniums, Oil on Panel, Special Frame
Peso Priced Item. Lawrence was a prolific painter of flowers, especially pansies and geraniums.
The framing on this piece is exceptional! I had trouble getting clear photos because of the thick glass that causes reflections.
His works framed in this style of handmade frame have been the highest selling pieces at auction;
in 2022 two works in this frame design sold for $2400 and $2900 dollars.
Over all the frame measures 26 12/" by 24 1/2", the painting itself measures 14 1/4" by 12 1/2".
Signed in the lower right (barely visible at bottom edge of artwork) "Lawrence Biddle '28".
On the backside there is a label with a drawing of a butterlfy and the following information: Geraniums - Pansies - Virginia Stock - 1928 - Lawrence Biddle - 125.
Not sure why the paper label is there.

Laurence Biddle was a British painter who was born in 1888. Laurence Biddle's work has been offered at auction multiple times, with realized prices ranging from 333 USD to 7,800 USD, depending on the size and medium of the artwork. Since 1998 the record price for this artist at auction is 7,800 USD for STILL LIFE WITH PANSIES AND MARIGOLDS, sold at Sotheby's New York in 2005. The artist died in 1968.
Known for Still life, flower painting. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of British Artists and latterly in America. In the 1940s he moved to Montgomery, Wales.
