* Bronze Sculpture Achilles; H. Noack Foundry, 1909
Priced in Mexican Pesos. A beautifully patinated bronze of the famous Achilles (Heel), from Greek mythology: The son of the mortal Peleus and the sea nymph Thetis.
14.5" tall with stone plinth and the bronze alone measures 9 3/4".
The charming story of Achilles: when he was a boy a seer, Calchas, prophesied the city of Troy would not be taken without his help. His mother alarmed, as one story goes, held him by his heel and dipped him into the fabled river Styx (separating the world of the living from that of the dead). She believed if the water covered him he would live forever. However as she held him by his heel it remained dry and therefore, unprotected.
We cannot find the artists mark on this fine sculpture but the foundry (who are more famous than most of the artists they cast for) is clearly marked in 2 places and dated 1909. Friedenau was at the time, a small settlement near Berlin
The company was founded by Hermann Noack in 1897, with early support from the sculptors August Gaul and Fritz Klimsch. Noack was born in Oberlausitz and educated in Lauchhammer. He learned his craft at the Gladenbeck foundry before setting up his own business. He had worked on the National Kaiser Wilhelm Monument by Reinhold Begas.
