Antique Talavera Vase from Sayula, Jalisco - RARE - Inscribed "Maria"
Peso Priced Item. Antique Mexican Pottery Vase from Sayula, Jalisco, VERY RARE.
This is 8" tall, 3 3/4" diameter at the base. A tiny glaze chip on one handle.
Google pottery from this area of Mexico and you'll find how rare it is to find a piece on the open market.
This from an historic Mexican family in Jalisco who go back to the 17th C, in the area.
What look like initials say "MARIA."
It was common for Hacenderos to have pieces custom made for their Haciendas, personalized, like here.
We have four pieces from the Estate listed on our webpage.
I included a photo of two pieces together so you can see the size comparisons....
Here we are selling, just the vase!
Sayula Jalisco was known from the mid to late 19th C. for their fine white clay and the thick creamy glaze that was used. Their production was very small, many items were custom made with names or intials of the owners. The decorations were simple and not always policromados. Tending to the traditional blue and white.
I have a small decorated pitcher offered for sale here on our Website too!
These are from my 30 year collection of Mexican pottery gathered from Estate sales and flea markets throughout Mexico.
