Antique Japanese Cloisonné Charger, Phoenix Bird, 14 1/4" dia.
Peso Priced Item:
A beautiful late 19th C. or early 20th C. Cloisonné dish from Japan. With no offense to the collectors of Chinese Cloisonné, most authorities concur that the Japanese Cloisonné is the finest. This piece shows a lovely Phoenix bird and the backside is fish scales. Here you can see the tiny little encrustations of sparkly material, a major difference between China and Japan. Chinese cloisonné was produced from as early as the 13th century. Japan did not produce cloisonné widely until the mid 19th century. There is a saying in the art world .. "the chinese invent, the japanese perfect!" This charger or shallow bowl measures 14 1/4" diameter. (OE)
