Antique Handel Slag Glass Table Lamp, 1904-20, Signed
Priced in Mexican Pesos. Antique Handel Slag Glass Table Lamp. This is an authentic, signed on the bottom. The Handel Lamp Co. was founded in 1885. In 1904 they made their first leaded glass lamp shades. The founder died in 1914 and slowly business began to lose it's originality and in the '20's was on the decline. Their lamps were originally promoted as a poor man's Tiffany. This design appears to resemble a spiders web around the bottom, that design was first produced in 1902 by Tiffany (see the last photo which is of the Tiffany design.
There are a few condition issues with this lamp, otherwise this would have a price tag over $2000 US dollars.
The shade has 'twisted' a bit at the top opening (the consignor says it was the result of the movers..) The box it was packed in left it loose to move around and during the trip down to Mexico from New England, it apparently shifted to a position that allowed it to get deformed during shipment.
ALSO, there are a few small cracks in the glass panes. Nothing is lost, all panels are firmly in place.
From my experience, these are minor details since the lamp is in very stable condition .. the lamp is a real beauty!! You won't find another in this area, anywhere!
