Angel Playing Lute, Fresco in 15th C. Method, Melozzo da Forli

Peso Priced Item.  This process is a modern application of the traditional Fresco method;  fresh plaster and colored clays applied to canvas.  The original was much larger and on the wall of the Santi Apostoli, Rome done by Melozzo da Fiorli.

In 1417, Pope Martin V, whose Colonna family owned the adjacent Palazzo Colonna, restored the church, while the facade was built at the end of the same century by Baccio Pontelli. It was frescoed late by Melozzo da Forlì whose wall-paintings at Santi Apostoli were renowned for their innovative techniques of foreshortening and came to be regarded as Melozzo's masterpiece.

Pope Clement XI instigated dramatic renovations of the church. Melozzo's frescoes were either destroyed or moved partly to the Quirinal and partly to the Vatican Museums.

Artwork measures 30" × 37".  This is one of two we are offereing from this Estate.  The one we offer here is the Angel Playing Lute, numbered 271/999
